A quarterly program for non-profit organizations developing small to medium scale community-based cultural programs, projects and events, such as fairs, parades, neighborhood festivals, conferences and publications.

Miami-Dade Tourist Development Council solicits nominations to fill board vacancies

The Miami-Dade Tourist Development Council is soliciting nominations to fill three vacancies on the board. Individuals meeting the qualifications and interested in the vacancies should submit a cover letter and resume to the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, 111 N.W. 1st Street, Suite 625, Miami, FL 33128; via fax (305) 375-3068 or via email at ndb1@miamidade.gov by the submission deadline of Sunday, December 15, 2019 at 4:00 p.m.

FROM SCRATCH: A FESTIVAL OF STAGED READINGS BY MIAMI PLAYWRIGHTS

The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Deering Estate at Cutler and the South Florida Theatre League, present From Scratch: a festival of staged readings by Miami Playwrights on Saturday, October 19 through Sunday, October 20, 2019 at the Sandrell Rivers Theater, 6103 NW 7th Avenue.  The festival will debut new work by playwrights participating in the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Playwright Development Program.

Scholarships Available for the National Arts Marketing Project Conference

Dear Cultural Colleagues,

I am pleased to invite you to attend the largest arts marketing conference in America, the National Arts Marketing Project Conference in Miami from Saturday, November 16th through Monday, November 18th. Every year, the National Arts Marketing Project Conference brings top arts and non-arts marketing experts from all over the country to a major U.S. city and, this year, they are coming to Miami!

Bahamas Hurricane Relief

Miami-Dade County is leading relief efforts for the residents of The Bahamas, where various islands have been hit hard by Hurricane Dorian’s devastating strength. There are various locations throughout Miami-Dade County accepting donations from the public for critical supplies.

Please see a list of donation supplies and items accepted for hurricane relief efforts. The following donation drop-off locations are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

Preparing for Hurricane Dorian

Dear Cultural Colleagues:

The Miami-Dade County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) continues to monitor the forecast track of Hurricane Dorian, which is currently a Category 1 hurricane. We are preparing for possible severe weather conditions with the storm intensifying; currently this is anticipated to begin as early as Saturday evening.

It is important to review your hurricane preparedness plan and be sure to take the necessary precautions over the weekend.

Update on County Judicial Appeal

As previously reported, Miami-Dade County submitted a petition to the Appellate Division of the Circuit Court of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit on June 17, 2019, appealing the City of Miami Mayor’s veto of the County’s application for a final Certificate of Appropriateness for the Coconut Grove Playhouse project, along with a motion to expedite the briefing and oral argument to resolve this final approval and to move forward with the project.

Miami-Dade County Appeals the City Mayor’s Playhouse Veto and Advances the Playhouse Project

On June 17, 2019, Miami-Dade County submitted a petition to the Appellate Division of the Circuit Court of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, appealing the City Mayor’s veto of the County’s application for a final Certificate of Appropriateness for the Coconut Grove Playhouse project. In addition, the County submitted a motion accompanied by an affidavit requesting that the appeal be calendared for a hearing on an expedited basis.

Miami-Dade County Remains Committed to Moving Forward with Coconut Grove Playhouse Project

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez reaffirmed Miami-Dade County’s commitment to move forward with the fully-developed plans for the Coconut Grove Playhouse project. Mayor Gimenez stated, “Our project restores and celebrates the historic architecture and brings theater back to the Playhouse. It creates a place that is pedestrian-friendly and welcoming to the Coconut Grove business district and the West Grove.
