Dear Cultural Community,
As we move into the month of March, I wanted to share a few important updates. In celebration of 305 Day, the Department of Cultural Affairs launched our LinkedIn page. In response to community feedback, we are continuing to strengthen and amplify the way we connect with you and share timely information.
Department Leadership Update
On Wednesday, March 4th, I was reappointed as Interim Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs as the administration continues the process of an open recruitment for a permanent Director. I am honored to continue to serve in this capacity. Thank you to Miami-Dade County Mayor Levine Cava for her confidence in me, and the Board of County Commissioners for their continued support.

Grants Updates
The Department’s grants programs are now accepting applications! Guidelines have changed for our Miami Individual Artists Grants Program to expand the reach and support as many artists as possible. You can read the guidelines changes here.
On Thursday, February 12th, the Cultural Affairs Council hosted the 17th Annual State of the Arts Address in Miami-Dade County. Mayor Levine Cava provided welcome remarks and Chairman Brian E. May shared the outlook for the arts for the upcoming fiscal year. Watch a recap of the live stream here or read the speech here. The next meeting for the Cultural Affairs Council is Wednesday, March 18th at 10:00 AM. The Council will host its annual Budget Retreat and discuss revenue generation for the cultural community.
Miami Emerging Arts Leaders Session
On March 31st at 10:00 AM, the Miami Emerging Arts Leaders will host an immersive Decision-making workshop for nonprofit leaders at the Marshall L. Davis Sr, African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. In a world of dynamic change, making sound decisions is at the heart of effective leadership. Through engaging, hands-on exercises that are fast-paced, interactive, and highly practical, participants will explore key techniques for decision-making and group problem-solving. This session will be led by Keith Revell, Associate Professor of Public Policy and Administration at Florida International University. RSVP here. I had the opportunity to take this course and found it extremely valuable in applying it to my professional career. Although the MEAL workshop is a sample of the course, I’m confident it will bring great insight to emerging and veteran thought leaders.
AKI Family Arts Festival
On May 2nd at 10:00 AM, the Department celebrates 20 years of the All Kids Included Family Arts Festival at the Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center. This event continues to celebrate students of all abilities and provide families with the support through creative program for kids with and without disabilities. Learn more here.
Art In Public Places Program
History continues to be made with the Department’s Art in Public Places Program. From the installation of one of the largest digital artworks at the MSC Cruises terminal at PortMiami, to a major public artwork coming to Miami International Airport, each project continues to support the vision and mission of the Department: to be a major, international cultural capital while equitably serving our local, diverse community.
Together we strive forward towards our vision!
Sincerely,
Ashlee K. Thomas
Interim Director, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs
