Freddick Bratcher

A professional world-class dancer, choreographer and teacher, Freddick Bratcher performed with the Donald McKayle Inner City Repertory Company of Los Angeles, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Martha Graham Dance Company, before being recruited to Miami in 1977 to join Fusion Dance Company, South Florida’s first major professional contemporary modern dance company. Bratcher helped lay the foundations for Miami’s diverse and growing dance community as co-artistic director and dance master. In 1980, he formed Freddick Bratcher and Company, which remained one of South Florida’s premier contemporary dance companies for more than 25 years. Many of his dancers continued their careers with companies such as Alvin Ailey, White Oak Dance Project, Parsons Dance, Philadanco, Martha Graham, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Bill T. Jones. A renowned teacher, he taught for 20 years at New World School of the Arts. A recipient of five Individual Artist Awards from the Florida Division of Arts and Culture, Bratcher also received the Lifetime Achievement in Dance Award from the Cultural Development Group in Miami. As a choreographer, Bratcher has created more than 80 works, for companies such as Fusion Dance Company, Ballet Concerto of Miami, Grove Dance Theatre, Miami Ballet, Dance Kaleidoscope of Indianapolis and the Vinette Carroll Repertory, as well as many television specials and commercials. The New York Times said “Mr. Bratcher is an accomplished and inventive choreographer… sleekness fortified with a dose of whimsy.” Now retired from teaching dance at colleges and universities, Bratcher continues to choreograph and teach in St. Augustine.
