Coconut Grove Playhouse stabilized

Miami-Dade County, in collaboration with the City of Miami, has taken swift action to stabilize and secure the Coconut Grove Playhouse site following a temporary pause in the project’s Phase 1 construction in the revitalization of this cherished cultural treasure. Immediate actions and protective measures to shore up the structure, ensure safety and preserve historic elements were put in place. The exterior of the building has been stabilized, inspected by the engineer, and reviewed by the City of Miami. The next steps are to formulate a plan to stabilize the interior of the front building. The stop work order from the City of Miami building department will remain in place until the interior bracing is complete and inspected.

“The Coconut Grove Playhouse is an essential piece of Miami’s artistic and cultural legacy. We remain committed to revitalizing this historic site while ensuring its unique character is preserved for generations to come,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We have finalized the first important steps of securing and stabilizing the building and are actively preparing to safely restart work on Phase 1 of the project, laying the foundation for a renewed cultural hub—one that will enrich the neighborhood, support local businesses, and provide new opportunities for residents.”

“I remain steadfast in my commitment to preserving the history of the Coconut Grove Playhouse,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado, District 7. “I am grateful for the collaboration with the City of Miami to get the project back on track. The progress made in stabilizing the structure marks a crucial step toward its reopening safely to welcome back audiences, honor its history and create an inspiring space for future artists and innovators in the heart of Coconut Grove.”

“The contractor and Miami-Dade County have done an outstanding job to ensure this structure was properly stabilized,” stated Asael Ace Marrero, Assistant City Manager and Chief of Infrastructure.

The project will bring back live theater to the Grove and re-activate the local business district, creating economic activity and opportunity for small businesses and a new cultural landmark for residents to enjoy.
