Overview:

The Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) seeks a creative, experienced and dynamic leader to significantly expand BAC’s role as a cultural hub in South Florida, enhance its programming in support of its resident artists and those in the community-at-large and maintain and improve upon its recently renovated facility.

BAC, a not-for-profit organization, provides emerging and mid-career visual artists with an affordable workplace, comprised of 70 studios, a project room, classroom, print room, darkroom, ceramic kiln area, woodworking and welding areas. Rotating exhibitions are held in BAC’s two gallery spaces. BAC also offers arts programs and lecture series to targeted audiences and the community at-large. The arts complex is housed in a 33,000 square foot former bakery on a 2.3-acre site.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to implement the vision and strategic objectives for BAC.
  • Assist the Board in developing and implementing a 3-5 year strategic plan.
  • Organize and prepare for annual board retreats to review and update the strategic plan.
  • Work with the Board President to develop board meeting agendas and prepare support documents as needed.
  • Attend all board meetings.
  • Support board committees as requested.
  • Prepare reports and related information for decision-making purposes.
  • Assist the board in updating policies and procedures.
  • In conjunction with the Board President, serves as the main spokesperson for BAC.
  • Responsible for determining staffing requirements for BAC and for staff management, including hiring, supervising, evaluating and terminating staff.
  • Nurture and maintain relationships with cultural partners, local art community (including commercial), community stakeholders, funders and donors.

Program Planning and Community Engagement

  • Expand BAC’s role as a visual arts cultural center in South Florida by developing innovative programming in the visual arts and other forms of artistic expression through partnerships with other arts and cultural organizations and institutions in and outside of South Florida.
  • Manage BAC’s juried artist studio program in a manner to generate a high caliber of artists in residence.
  • Ensure high quality exhibition programming in the gallery spaces through guest curators and juried shows.
  • Develop and implement programming for resident artists and artists in the community at-large:
    • Career advancement seminars and panel discussions in areas of need identified by resident artists.
    • Artistic advancement, such as master classes utilizing common work areas.
  • Develop and implement programming for targeted audiences and the community-at-large such as workshops, panel discussions and lecture series.
  • Promote public awareness of BAC’s resident artists and BAC programming and attract visitors through social media, traditional media and other means.

Operational Management:

  • Serve as property manager for rental spaces within the BAC facility (e.g. studios and common areas made available for rent).
  • Ensure day-to-day management of common work areas.
  • Ensure daily upkeep and maintenance of the BAC facility to ensure a high quality physical environment and protection of capital investment in the facility.
  • Manage capital improvement project(s) as may be directed by the Board.

Development

  • Work with Board to secure funding to support programming and operations through the development of a fundraising plan and its implementation.
  • Research funding sources and opportunities; perform or oversee development such as grant writing, funding proposals, fundraising events, donor and membership programs; and conduct direct donor solicitations.
  • Promote public awareness of BAC and increase visitors through social media and other means.

Financial Management

  • Work with the Executive Board and Finance Committee to prepare an annual comprehensive budget for Board approval for timely consideration, review and approval. Such budget shall provide for routine maintenance, a maintenance reserve and anticipated capital needs (for substantial repairs, renovations and/or improvements).
  • Manage the BAC annual budget, including but not limited to, administering BAC funds in accordance with the approved budget, monitoring the monthly cash flow of the organization and providing regular reporting of expenditures against budget and cash flow projections to the Board.
  • Ensure sound financial controls, reporting, and accounting practices are in place and followed.
  • Ensure that human resource policies and procedures are in place and compliance is maintained.

Qualifications

The candidate must have executive or senior management experience in art-related non-profit organizations with proven success in leadership, fundraising, budget and resource responsibilities and managing operations and programming. A minimum of a bachelors degree is required. Computer, communication, public speaking, writing, verbal and high organizational skills are required.

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Strong working knowledge of the visual arts (including marketplace) and other forms of artistic expression, preferably with connections to national/international arts communities.
  • Demonstrated success in developing creative programming in the visual arts and other forms of artistic expression, offering cutting edge programming while engaging diverse communities and leveraging partnerships with other arts and cultural organizations.
  • The creative vision and entrepreneurial spirit necessary to expand BAC’s role as a vibrant visual arts cultural center within South Florida.
  • The ability to foster an environment of creativity, teamwork and respect for those who work in, on behalf of and engage with BAC.

Status
Full-time, exempt position. Evenings and weekends as necessary.
