Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and an AAM-accredited museum in Miami, Florida (www.vizcaya.org). The Curator is the primary person responsible for conducting and coordinating research of Vizcaya’s art collections, which include furnishings, decorative arts, textiles, paintings, outdoor sculpture, personal assets, and architectural features primarily dating to the 18th and 19th century with some objects dating to the 1st century AD; and archival collections consisting of correspondence, photographs and architectural drawings documenting the creation and construction of the estate. Given the integral relation between the collections and the social, cultural and historical context of this Gilded Age estate, the curator’s research interests should be interdisciplinary. The Curator reports to the Deputy Director for Collections and Curatorial Affairs. The Curator may supervise interns.

Essential Functions
Collaborate on the interpretation of the collections and the estate as a whole—including the Vizcaya Village--to enhance experiences for the general public.
Provide content for and participate in the development of interpretive and communications materials (such as object labels, guided tours, the website and social media), support Volunteer Guide training and participate in public programming.
Lead efforts to mount at least one site-specific contemporary art exhibition at Vizcaya each year and collaborate on advancing other aspects of Vizcaya’s Contemporary Arts Program.
Develop, implement, and maintain a furnishing plan for the decorated rooms and gardens.
Conduct and disseminate research on Vizcaya’s art collections and history, in support of interpretation and conservation projects
Serve on one or more cross-departmental committees that serve to support and enhance a broad-based approach to projects, programs and initiatives that involve the entire institution.
Participate in the identification of funding sources and collaborate on the preparation of funding requests, grant applications, and grant reports.
Support the consolidation and improvement of collections storage, and the ongoing deaccession and disposition of non-original objects from Vizcaya’s collection.
Respond to objects-related inquiries from staff, the general public and researchers, and assist PR and marketing staff with collections-related inquiries from the media.
Represent Vizcaya and present collections- and research-related content at professional meetings.

Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience
Required: Master’s degree in Art History, History, Museum Studies or related field. A minimum of three years of experience working in a collection- or content-related or curatorial capacity in a museum, educational or art-related environment.

Skills and Attributes
Experience in and passion for making collections and history interesting and meaningful to diverse audiences.
Knowledge of the history of art, decorative arts, material culture, and/or design that is relevant to Vizcaya’s collections and history.
Knowledge or and interest in contemporary art, especially as a tool for interpreting history.
Demonstrated experience in conducting and disseminating research on primary and secondary source materials.
Ability to work independently as well in a team, in a collaborative and respectful manner.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Effective organizational and administrative skills with an ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
The majority of work is done in an office setting, with some portion involving interaction with donors and other constituents on and off site. Occasional evening and weekend work required as job duties demand. Vizcaya is a non-smoking environment.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt position.
