Background
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and accredited museum. The estate is
owned by Miami-Dade County and has been operated by the non-profit Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Trust, Inc. since 2017.

Our mission is to preserve Vizcaya’s cultural and environmental resources to engage people in
connecting with the past, understanding the present and shaping the future. We are positioning Vizcaya
as an enduring, inclusive and innovative place that inspires people to embrace the cultural vitality and
environmental sustainability of the world around us.

Civic Engagement at Vizcaya
Volunteers and civic engagement are an important part of a successful museum and community. While
Vizcaya currently offers volunteer and paid internship opportunities, the organization aims to develop
new experiences that will support students seeking academic credit, those seeking a one-time service
project, or people of all ages looking for an opportunity to connect with others and share, develop and
practice their skills. Volunteer and paid internship opportunities will be offered in a variety of
departments, including: Learning, Collections and Curatorial, Horticulture, Marketing and Advancement.
As a community-centered cultural organization, Vizcaya is at the beginning of a strategic process to
strengthen the diversity of our Board, staff and volunteers, with particular emphasis on increasing the
number of those who self-identify as other than White or Hispanic. Community-centered means being
welcoming of our entire community, being reflective of the community, and offering relevant
opportunities to participate. In order to advance our work, we are making intentional efforts to
strengthen focus on diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI) and on community participation
in program development.
