Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer leads the Facilities Services Department in the maintenance of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA), by providing technical expertise in the operation of the Physical Plant.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise, develop and maintain facility maintenance operation, including: Operation of the chiller plant, emergency generators, fire pumps, lift stations, heating ventilation and air conditioning equipment, refrigeration, plumbing, water treatment, preventive maintenance, air compressors, ice machines, lighting, kitchen equipment, emergency generators, water softeners, switch rooms, roof exhausts, electrical substations, etc.
  • Inspect and evaluate physical condition of property, including the physical plant, all meeting rooms, public areas and outdoor areas on an ongoing and regular basis.
  • Works closely with Facility Director and other departments on maintenance and repairs issues.
  • Order material and complete work assignments by specified date.
  • Perform work within departmental expense plans.
  • Interprets specifications, job orders and company policies to maintenance employees.
  • Oversees compliance with OSHA standards regarding proper usage, dilution of products, equipment safety and usage as well as blood-borne pathogen precautions and procedures.
  • Schedule building projects and maintenance around production schedules.
  • Supervise maintenance staff including hiring, firing, coaching etc.
  • Work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays on a regular basis.
  • Attend training to be informed of changes in local, state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the supervision of preventative maintenance programs.
  • Ensure that all maintenance technicians are OSHA compliant and follow safety procedures.
  • Perform continuous educations training procedures of personnel.
  • Oversee the HVAC energy management computerized system.
  • Works with the Facilities Director in developing, implementing, and maintains strategic, fiscal and capital improvement plans for the Facility Operations Division.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understands government regulations affecting facility operations.
  • Knowledge of building construction and utilities maintenance.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays regularly.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, in English.
  • Able to keep records and prepare reports.
  • Able to work effectively and positively with others.

 

Required Education and Experience

  • High school or equivalent with a Trade or Technical Certification  or a minimum of 5 years' experience as a Chief Engineer or Maintenance Supervisor.
